How does your body deal with stress?

What stressors do you notice throwing off your cycle?

What do your notice nourishes and supports your cycle?

I admit, last month's cycle was a rough one for me.

It started with a big move across the country, and leaving behind a failed relationship, a community, and precious friends. While I had an absolute blast playing BIG LOVE with my theater company, my body showed me signs of the incredible stress of it all and did amazing things to heal.

In my body, stress looks like:

  • In the Follicular Phase (before ovulation):
    • Acne (worst breakout I've EVER had!)
    • Copious amounts of Cervical Fluid (a sign of excess estrogen)
  • In the Luteal Phase (after ovulation):
    • Low temperatures
    • Tender breasts
    • Sore, achy muscles
    • Neck/shoulder pain
    • Intense dreams and disturbed sleep
    • Constipation
    • A shorter Luteal Phase (a sign that progesterone and estrogen are out of balance)

What signs do you experience when you're stressed?

Every body deals with stress differently, but stress will always show up in your cycle. Charting your cycle can be a valuable tool in understanding how to care for your body better.

Because I live a life of Body Literacy, I know what stressors have contributed to what my symptoms. And I know how I can change it!

Here are some things I did last cycle that I definitely won't be doing this cycle:

  • Eating shitty road snacks like gas station jerky (guaranteed to have endocrine disruptors like growth hormones and soy products!)
  • Drinking coffee first thing on an empty stomach
  • Skipping meals (that and the coffee thing disrupt your blood sugar balance which is a MAJOR stressor on your endocrine system)
  • Drinking alcohol (drinks with my theater company - gotta live a little!)
  • Screentime past 9pm
  • Less than 7 hours of sleep
  • Painting my nails (the character I played needed them, but I sure don't need the toxins!)

Did you read any of those points and think, "uh-oh, that sounds familiar"?

There are many surprisingly simple things that you can easily incorporate into your daily routines to nourish your cyclical health!

This cycle, I am definitely:

  • Getting morning sunlight within 30 mins of waking
  • Eating a nourishing breakfast (fiber, protein, carbs and fats in that order!) within 90 mins of waking
  • Regular meal times (keep that blood sugar balanced!)
  • Limiting Caffeine to after meals, with protein, once per week or less
  • One celebratory drink per month or less
  • Natural lighting after dark (no screens!)
  • 7-8 hours of sleep each night
  • Regular practices to soothe my nervous system, like belly rubs and meditation
  • Synching food and exercise to suit the phases of my cycle
